Steve...glad to hear you made a mix that was "less radio-friendly."

What do you mean by "never give up"? Has that guy been re-listing that for a while or something? I could see it going for $100 or so...

Now, the $24,999 test pressing of Bleach he has on white vinyl on the other hand...

Hahahaha.

Did you also notice, at the bottom of the page, the links to his other listings? How about the "Sliver/Dive" test pressing for $24,999.99? Come on.....a friend gave me this record (not a test pressing, but the actual 7") a couple of years ago in exchange for a box of old show flyers (he has an archive). Do people really pay exorbitant amounts of money for rare vinyl? I mean, I know there are chumps out there who do, who blow a load or two over a green marble pressing of *insert obscure band name here*, but...Why?

The icing on this bullshit cake is that he charges $4 for shipping.

Wait why would it be printed up with a jacket? Didn't the label say that it had to be remixed? Why would any of them get made in the old mix? This seems really dumb. No one buy this.

The auction clearly states that they ... "grabbed the wrong mix". This doesn't seem like something that one could just accidentally do...

It happens. When Sly & the Family Stone's album "Fresh" was released on CD, they pressed and distributed the wrong mix of the album to stores. It's way, way different than the LP and the correct CD version that came out later. The CD was only in stores for a day or two before the label realized what happened, and they recalled them all. Of course every record store in the world said, "Uh, we, uh.... sold them all already. Yeah." and promptly jacked the price up or bought them for themselves.

You'd be amazed at how little people at major labels know about their tape vaults.

I bought this exact same pressing for $29.99 from Music Direct last year. It is definitely the Albini mix. They still sell it for $34.99. I'm pretty sure there are lots of other stores selling it too.

How do people fall for shit like this?

p.s. I kinda think even the non-ripoff price of $34.99 is a fucking ripoff for a single record.

I guess if it was the UMRK where everything is specifically pretty much Zappa, it'd make initial sense to me.

This stuff fascinates me. I love record pressing/mastering/mixing minutiae.

This mix can be found easily in both lossless and lossy formats on various BitTorrent trackers. Ditto for the Albini recorded version of Cheap Trick's "In Color".

That is true. There's one torrent out there that includes vinyl rips of In Utero, Nevermind and Unplugged, all in FLAC. I don't know if there's anything different about the latter two (other than the whole vinyl versus digital thing), but the In Utero rip is definitely of the so called Albini mix.

I'm glad I own the record of In Utero though and highly recommend it, despite the ridiculous price. It's an excellent album to play all the way through and the pressing sounds great. I don't even know if I prefer the different mixes of Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies, but they're no worse than the ones on the CD, and it's cool to hear something different when I sit down to play the record.

On the released version, aren't Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies the only two that were un-Steved? The other songs weren't fucked with, right?

I be bumpin' because I just picked up this version of the album at Reckless. They've been stocking it every once in a while for $27.99. I can't verify what it is sourced from or how many generations removed it may be, or if somebody really did just make lacquer masters from that mix (apparently, it's the one that gets pressed in Europe regardless of what the liner notes say). It doesn't sound many generations removed from whatever master was used. I can verify that the whole album is pretty different.

It sounds like Nirvana playing their songs together very very well, much more flattering to them as a band. Yes, All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box are very different, especially the super-fucked effect on the latter's guitar solo. The swelling slide-kinda guitar at the end of Serve The Servants is way more present in the mix. Drums generally sound better, and they kind of own the mix at certain points - a lot less room ambience. The thing is drier on the whole than the released version, and not as unnaturally inflated. The Litt remix squashed the hell out of this band, who have even more dynamic range than I had previously thought.

"Milk It" now sounds like the Jesus Lizard to me. Pick up a copy if you can find it.
