I think Live at the Gymnasium has been posted here before. I had it on my HD but now it's missing. Thanks for finding it again, Mike!

Scroat Belly

Image

Take equal parts punk rock and East Tennessee bluegrass, mix 'em up in a blender with a quart of bourbon and an ounce of crystal. Shove a big tin funnel in your mouth and pour the whole mess down your throat while your crazy cousin Zeke jabs you in the ribs with a cattle prod, and you got yourself a Scroat Belly there, mister.

This is a criminally underated record. A concept record/rock opera at that.

Kirk Rundstrom passed away a couple of years ago. Some of the other members are in Split Lip Rayfield.

The reunion show they played at The Empty Bottle just before Kirk passed was fucking nuts.

A guy in a Suicidal Tendencies shirt tried to get me to ordain his friend and him best friends for life.

Can't miss.

The Mekons - The Quality of Mercy Is Not Strnen

This album was recorded with Gang of Four's equipment. The production is pretty decent. The original album is tracks 1-12. There are bonus tracks from singles that show them getting further into a more synthesized, possibly dub-esque sound. It's pretty far from the sounds they'd be exploring on albums like Fear and Whiskey (it's also not nearly as good), but it is some great punk. You should probably take a listen.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Manicured Noise - Northern Stories 1978/80

In print, but really hard to find. These guys are seriously obscure - one of the many, many Manchester postpunk bands who got kinda lost in the shuffle. The one problem is that they didn't deserve it. Imagine a combination of Josef K at their funkiest and Blurt with a British David Byrne on vocals. Actually, the Blurt comparison is misleading. The saxophone is a little hard to take at first, because it's not just skronking around, but often playing melodies that may seem a little cheesy at first. It's really weird, but really good. Some songs here are really great. The earliest material here - two songs, "Music B" and "Counterplan" - was recorded with a different vocalist at This Heat's studio, Cold Storage.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

My initial description was pretty misleading, I think now, but I'm glad someone likes it. The sax sounds very Roxy Music-esque a good deal of the time, and there's a pretty strong Chic influence on what they're doing on the funkier stuff, which I think could only be a good thing. I love the funkier stuff. The more avant-garde stuff I'm not quite as sold on, but it's still good stuff. I was glad to find this.

Say, do you have the 12" version of PiL's "Memories"? I've never heard it and have wanted to hear it for years.

Yeah I wasn't expecting this to be so melodic, you are right about the Chic influence, but I was pleasantly suprised.

I do...but on vinyl. I don't have the equipment to transfer it to mp3 or something unfortunatly. To be quite honest, you are really not missing much. It's the Metal Box version with, I think, one guitar and vocal track and the awesome change that happens about a minute and a half in removed.

All the same, this is probably making you more interested. I'll try and sort something out for you, though don't hold your breath. Do you know Plastic Box is being reissued in December? That's on my Christmas list for sure.

Also apparently a new version of Metal Box on three discs (?): http://www.pilofficial.com/info.html scroll down a little to November 9th

Glad you all like it. I only heard them when I was digging through old broadcasts on WFMU. I flipped and dug around through mp3 blogs for a link to the album and found one, which I put up here... lucky thing.

I don't usually do this sort of thing, but I have this song called "Mary Hair" in my head and I can't shake the shit/find it anywhere. It's on a 7" of a Lou Barlow side project with Bob Fay and someone else. The band is called 'Belt Buckle' or 'Beltbuckle'. I doubt anyone will have it, but I figured I'd take a shot.

Thanks.
