Music to listen to while recapping your new Studer

Postby greg on Sat Dec 04, 2004 3:03 am

I bought a Studer A820 24 track the other day and am recapping it now.
At the end of the day when I'm sober (enough), and awake I'll recap a channel or two of this new machine. I have a nice setup in my kitchen where I within ear shot of my stereo and through the archway can see my tv. The kitchen table (built by my friend Josh) sits above the heat vent feeding the room so I have nice, warm air blowing at my toes. Here I have the array of caps and soldering tools to do my business. It's easier to desolder and solder under these conditions. With a good album on I can loose track of time and get a bunch done. Recapping a channel is a bunch of work.
There are about 35 caps to replace on a channel of cards for this machine. The toughest is the Line Amplifier board(s). There are two circuit boards tethered together by a fragile ribbon cable. You have to be careful not to stress that cable when you unfold the two boards. Solid core wires will break easily.
Anywho- That is what I'm doing to music.
So far it has been-
Channel 10: The Clash "The Clash"
Channel 18: The New Year "The End is Near"
Channel 23: Wire "Chair is Missing" (Bill Skibbe gave me this for my birthday one year. Thanks Bill.)
Repro Head Preamp cards: Silkworm "Blue Blood", "It'll be Cool" Andrew was with me and I was trying to play him examples of this band. I couldn't find my "Libertine" album. He wasn't interested.
Studer A-80 RC 1/2" Audio cards: Roxy Music "Siren", Built to Spill (one of their later records?), and some other band
Those cards were much easier.

Studer A-80 RC: The Stooges "Fun House"

Recapped the audio power supply (5min). I was waiting for these two enormous caps to show up. They did.

Greg -
Have you heard the Castanets record? I got it recently and I find time flies by when I've got that on. The singer's voice annoyed me at first, but it grew on me really quickly.

Wasn't sure if you were looking for suggestions, but what the hell.

i had the luxury of working on this machine over the weekend doing overdubs and mixing - i can safely say it's the nicest thing i've ever worked on. the auto calibration is so cool. it's also one of those things that noone really except the engineer would care about - it saved a ton of time getting ready before the band came. i will also note that 2/3rds of the band didn't even notice that we were using this new machine vs the old mci.

Channel 19: Built to Spill "Ancient Melodies of the Future" (same as the last time),
Devin Davis "Lonely People of the World Unite"
One of the records I was playing the other night (while recapping- to stay in context) was "Raw Power" by The Stooges. I have had mixed feelings about this record. My old roommate was trying to sell me on this, but it sounds like a bad band from high school. There are good points, but not enough to make it a GOOD one. Sorry, but I'm calling bullshit on this record. It seriously sounds like a bad high school band recorded live at some youth center sometime I don't care about. ?No shit. It might have been new to the time, but crap is crap.
I have a long drive to work and only a tape deck in my car to listen to when my radio goes out. I copy albums to listen to on the way and "Raw Power" was the newest one w/ The Clash "Combat Rock" on the other side. There are a few songs I like on Combat Rock and I'd play those over again to avoid the record on the other side.

I need a better desoldering iron.

I love to solder, but I find it to be extremely frustrating when you can't see what you are doing. Between bad lighting and bad eyesight, I always end up failing unless it's something simple like a guitar cable.

Do you have any pictures of the insides of this machine? I was just curious to see what it looks like inside of those.

Happy soldering.

It's a little too cute and hip for me to listen to at times. Still a good cd.

Does your quality control improve (or suffer) depending on how interesting the record is? Jush wondrin'...

If I may humbly suggest:

Paul Westerberg "Stereo"

It's a two-disc album: One of acoustical gems, the other of plugged in jams. Either works perfectly, depending on your mindset.
It's a self-produced/recorded album from his home's basement upon which he plays all instruments as well - foibles, missed notes, flubbed lyrics, tape running out in the middle of a take and all - for better or for worse. I argue for the better, for it's the most honest album I own.

Channel 20: Sergei Prkofiev Alexander Nevsky/Lt. Kije'
I've listened to this about every morning for the past 7 months.
I have a cd that I pick and choose from. It is a settling cd. It makes me imagine things.
It might be schlock, but I like it.
Oh.!
I need a new desolderer!

And I must have my TV on.

Hotel 2 Tango Studio in Montreal, recapped whole 24 track.
No records from start to finish, a lot of CBC, WNUR, BEZ, Cubs games, and construction noise.
Montreal is a pretty town.

Someone gave me a record of his, when he was Irving Philharmonic.

I love it.
