Heater was their second LP. Speed is their first one, recorded by the "classic" Furnish/Cook/Chatham/Mudd lineup and released on Automatic Wreckords. Shouldn't be that hard to find, there might even be some mp3s floating around here and there.

"Speed" is classic! It is somewhat hard to find though. Its been out of print since 1992/93 & here in Louisville it sells for around $20 or more. I need to track down a copy too. I have a good quality tape copy though, and I can burn it onto cd for you, if your interested in working out a cdr trade or something. I also made a cdr awhile back with "Heater" and nearly all the 7"s/ splits & comp tracks (well everything post- SPEED). There is also the CRAIN/DEATHWATCH split 7" (good luck finding it for less than $30), & the "ROCKET" 7" that were released before SPEED. If you or anybody else is interested in cdr copies of that stuff let me know ( I have tape copies of the Deathwatch split & the Rocket 7" too but the sound quality is poor as they're third or more generation dubs, also both comp tracks from HEATER, which was the Heater era Crain lineup a few years before HEATER was released).

There's also a split 7" with The Grifters that Simple Machines (I think) put out.

"Speed" is well worth finding. I paid $6 for my copy and worth every penny. It's definately a lot different from "Heater;" faster and more melodic.

I REALLY want to head those aborted album three sessions. Sexy.

The first 100 copies of Speed were numbered and sold at the album release show and had handmade glow-in-the-dark covers. We all spent several hours in Tim's basement silkscreening them.

I saw one of these on Ebay about a year ago for $30, so I had to get it. I now have 2. I also have 2 copies of the regular Speed release.

I have put the entire album up for free downloads as MP3's here: http://65.81.66.107/hober

I also posted a bunch of unreleased stuff.

This location will be moving soon, but there will be a forward link there.

hey Will, I have a glow-in-the-dark Speed too. The release show was Sebadoh, Crain and Hula Hoop at the sandwich shop, right? That shit blew my 16 year-old mind. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks yourself, sir. And thanks for fixing those broken links. It is very nice to hear Speed again. My vinyl copy that I bought oh-so many years ago was great, yet it had permanent crackle on it.

The other stuff, as well, she's-a verry nice.

Crain "Speed" gets expanded reissue

Postby trllove on Wed Oct 27, 2004 1:53 pm

For all of you that are itching to see/hear/hold a legitimate copy of Crain's debut album, "Speed," we're reissuing this album – for the first time on CD – with 4 bonus tracks, including a song from the same Albini sessions called "Fuckerman," as well as three more tracks recorded during the same era in Washington, DC by Don Zientara. The whole beautiful mess is currently being remastered from the original master tapes in Ventura, CA by the delicate hands of John Golden. A release date has been set for April 2005. The reissue will not be available on vinyl, sorry.

Thanks,
jdv.

V.Cool! It's hard to believe it took 10+ years for someone to issue Speed on CD... My original vinyl pressing sounds like shite, so it's a most welcome release. Now if someone would finally issue the Slint live record...

Rare Rodan

I've offered to release an anniversary set that compiles everything (the Aviary cassette, the Three Little girls single, the b-sides and the BBC session), but justifiably they have a respectful allegiance to Touch and Go. So if any of you ever see Corey Rusk at a bar or an Easter egg hunt, hassle him about doing it!
